Just what the Bruins could expect from James van Riemsdyk was anyone’s guess.The 34-year-old Van Riemsdyk, a seven-time 20-goal scorer, was coming off an injury-marred season in Philadelphia in which he was held to 12-17-29 totals in 61 games. That, combined with a depressed NHL economy last summer, allowed the B’s to sign him to a low-risk one-year, $1 million contract.So far, it’s looking like quite a bargain. OTTAWA — The chief of the defence staff says in a new message to military members that China and Russia are expansionist powers that don’t differentiate between war and peace. Gen. Man facing 16 charges in violent sexual assault

A 35-year-old man is facing more than a dozen charges in connection with a violent sexual assault earlier this summer.Police say on June 6th they were initially called to a home in the area of Eglinton Avenue and Midland Avenue. It’s alleged that a man and a woman were arguing in the home and the woman attempted to flee the residence. Investigators say the man refused to let her leave and repeatedly assaulted and sexually assaulted her. The woman later managed to escape when the man was asleep.Two days later police executed a search warrant and recovered evidence related to the investigation.On Thursday, Jason Devine was taken into custody and charged with 16 criminal offences including multiple assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement charges, and four counts of failing to comply with bail conditions.

A loud but peaceful demonstration by students was held at a Scarborough high school on Thursday, as The Muslim Students Association organized a noon-hour pro-Palestinian rally at Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute.Students at other Toronto high schools were encouraged to take part in a fourth-period walkout between 2 and 3 p.m. They included Woburn Collegiate Institute, David and Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute, Agincourt Collegiate Institute, R.H. Norfolk Southern investing in automated inspection systems on its railroad to improve safety

(AP) — To help quickly spot safety defects on moving trains, Norfolk Southern said Thursday it has installed the first of more than a dozen automated inspection portals on its tracks in Ohio — not far from where one of its trains careened off the tracks in February and spilled hazardous chemicals that caught fire.The new portals, equipped with high-speed cameras, will take hundreds of pictures of every passing locomotive and rail car. The pictures are analyzed by artificial intelligence software the railroad developed. FDA warns about giving probiotics to preterm babies after infant death, other injuries

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning health care providers and the public about injuries and at least one death in premature infants who were given probiotic products in the hospital. The products, which supplement regular feeding and contain live organisms such as bacteria or yeast, can lead to invasive, potentially fatal infections or disease, the FDA said Thursday. One death this year and more than two dozen reports of injuries since 2018 may be tied to the supplements, FDA officials said in a statement. Ontario’s public high school teachers are now turning to binding arbitration to get a new contract, as bargaining has concluded with the union unable to reach a negotiated deal with the province.The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation agreed to a novel process that eliminates the possibility of strikes during bargaining and for the next three years.The union ratified a deal last month with the government that would see negotiations continue until Oct. 27, after which any outstanding issues would be decided by an arbitrator.
