Driver cited for negligent motor vehicle homicide over death of student at UMass Dartmouth

A driver has been cited in connection with the death of a student on the campus of UMass Dartmouth earlier this year.The Bristol County District Attorney’s office in previous statements said UMass Dartmouth campus police first responded to the scene on Ring Road on April 6 around 5:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. Once scene, officials said, police found 19-year-old Frank Petillo Jr. lying in the roadway with serious injuries. Petillo was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Officials said the driver of the car that struck Petillo stayed at the scene after the crash. Writing on Thursday, a spokesperson for the DA’s office said the driver has now been cited for negligent motor vehicle homicide.“The individual now has a right to a clerk magistrates hearing before an official criminal charge can be issued,” the spokesperson said. While the crash remained under investigation, friends and com...

The tax credit, called the Employee Retention Credit, was designed help small businesses keep paying their employees during the height of the pandemic if they were fully or partly suspended from operating. The credit ended on Oct. 1, 2021, but businesses could still apply retroactively by filing an amended payroll tax return.A growing number of questionable claims are coming from small businesses who may or may not be aware that they aren’t eligible. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An explosion inside a shipping container at the world’s largest railyard prompted evacuations in western Nebraska Thursday because of the toxic smoke generated when one of the chemicals aboard caught fire.Around noon, an explosion occurred inside an intermodal container on a railcar at Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard in North Platte, though it wasn’t clear what caused the explosion, railroad spokeswoman Robynn Tysver said. No one was injured, and no cars derailed.Authorities evacuated everyone within a one-mile radius of the explosion in the western end of the railyard because of the smoke, and U.S. Highway 30 was closed between North Platte and Hershey.
