Storms rolled through much of southern New England Friday afternoon, bringing down trees and utility poles while knocking out power for thousands of people.As of 11 p.m., some 47,000 customers were without power across the Bay State alone, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency’s outage map.Around 79 percent of Andover, totaling more than 11,500 customers, is out of power, and North Andover, Lawrence and Acton are all experiencing significant outages as of 11 p.m.Much of central and western Massachusetts remained under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 11 p.m., with Middlesex, Essex, Worcester, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire counties all a part of the watch.In terms of damage, scenes across the region included one in Andover where crews were responding to report of a tree that splintered and fell onto a vehicle. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum closed to visitors Thursday night due to a planned climate protest.More than a thousand people were expected for a free admission night, but officials said threats of a protest were a high risk. “To have to shut the doors was really a hard decision, but on the other hand we don’t want to ever risk their safety, the safety of our staff, or the safety, of course, of the artwork,” said Donna Hardwick with the museum.They abruptly closed four hours early, canceling their popular Free First Thursdays admission program.“We have to just evaluate what the information is as we get it,” Hardwick said.The climate activists were planning to put their artwork in frames in the Dutch Room of the museum. Man in life-threatening condition after being hit by vehicle in Toronto’s east end

Powerful earthquake strikes Morocco, killing hundreds and damaging historic buildings

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — A powerful earthquake struck Morocco late Friday night, killing hundreds of people and damaging buildings and historic landmarks in major cities.Morocco’s Interior Ministry said early Saturday that at least 296 people had died in the provinces near the quake. Additionally, 153 injured people were sent to hospitals for treatment. The ministry wrote that most damage occurred outside of cities and towns.Moroccans posted videos showing buildings reduced to rubble and dust, and parts of the famous red walls that surround the old city in Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, damaged. Search underway for 72-year-old man missing from Austin neighborhood

CHICAGO — A search is underway for a man missing from the city's Austin neighborhood, according to Chicago police.Police say 72-year-old Charles Milburn, who suffers from dementia, was last seen leaving his home in Chicago's Austin neighborhood on Friday. Milburn was last seen wearing a white hat and a white t-shirt with black pants and white Nike gym shoes.  CPD: Missing elderly man last seen near Clybourn Corridor Milburn stands 5-foot-6 and weighs around 130 pounds according to police. Officers say he has brown eyes and grey hair.According to police, Milburn suffers from dementia and may be disoriented.
