Mexico’s president offers to buy US company’s coastal property for $375 million to end dispute

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president said Thursday that he has offered to buy an American company’s Caribbean coast property for about $385 million to end a bitter, years-long dispute. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said a formal offer would be presented to Alabama-based Vulcan Materials. The company operated gravel extraction pits at the Yucatan peninsula site before López Obrador’s administration closed them. The company said it had not yet received the president’s proposal or responded to the idea. In papers filed for a case before an international arbitration panel, Vulcan Materials valued the almost 6,000-acre (2,400 hectare) property, located just south of the resort town of Playa del Carmen, at $1.9 billion.López Obrador said his much lower offer was fair and based on a government assessment. LOUIS (AP) — Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ hit St. Louis catcher Willson Contreras in the head with a long follow-through on a swing, then was soon hit himself by a pitch from Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas.Mikolas and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol were ejected in the first-inning dustup between the longtime rivals.Contreras was cut badly and tumbled down. A reported tornado touched down near Keene, New Hampshire Thursday, leaving damage in multiple spots as a larger series of storms moved across the region.The threat of storms initially prompted a widespread severe thunderstorm watch in effect for most of southern New England. A scary scene unfolded at Mayflower Beach in Dennis Thursday as police said three female swimmers had to be pulled from the water in “medical distress.” The rescues unfolded on a busy day at the beach with beachgoers crowded in the heat. Later speaking with 7NEWS, fellow beachgoers described the scene as people in the area rushed to help. Among those rescued was a young girl. A building of the American International College in Springfield suffered significant damage Thursday after a lightning strike, the college’s president said in a statement. The Springfield Fire Department first said its crews were on scene around 5:30 p.m. battling a second alarm fire the American International College’s Courniotes Hall at 1000 State Street. Photos from the scene showed flames burning through the building’s roof as crews poured water on the fire.In his statement, College President Hubert Benitez said lightning struck Courniotes Hall Thursday afternoon. Campus police later searched the building and confirmed no one was inside, according to Benitez. Courniotes Hall houses the American International College’s nursing problem in addition to classrooms for health science courses.In the wake of Thursday’s lightning strike and fire, Benitez said the college “is committed to taking all actions necessary to ensure that we provide students with continuity i...
