(BCN) -- BART service is recovering after an equipment problem on the tracks caused major delays for trains Wednesday morning between San Bruno and San Francisco International Airport.The transit agency initially issued an alert shortly after 6:45 a.m. about the problem, which was causing delays of 20 minutes or more for trains in both directions through the area. 20,000 Kaiser health care workers on strike in the Bay Area BART did not specify what equipment was causing the delays, but said shortly before 8 a.m. that service was recovering with residual delays.Copyright © 2023 Bay City News, Inc.

Street closures, transit detours in DC for ‘Open Streets Georgia Avenue’

Three miles of Georgia Avenue will be closed to vehicles on Saturday for the District Department of Transportation’s Open Streets event that encourages residents to walk, run, bike and play along the Northwest street.The route will feature free workout classes, musical performances, community yoga, roller derby lessons and many more events. Check out DDOT’s website for the full schedule.Open Streets is meant to encourage community, healthy lifestyles and sustainable modes of transportation, with bike repair clinics, bike mechanics classes and even bike decorating being offered at the event. DDOT will also be giving away 170 free bikes in a raffle. District residents can apply through the Open Streets webpage.Georgia Avenue will be closed off from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 7, from Missouri Avenue to Barry Place NW. The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced the 2023 class of fellows, often known as recipients of the “genius grant,” on Wednesday. Pakistani army says 2 people were killed when a Taliban guard opened fire at a border crossing

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — A Taliban guard opened fire at civilians at a border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing two people, including a 12-year-old boy, the Pakistani military said. Another child was wounded in the shooting at the Chaman border crossing in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province. The military said in a statement that Pakistani troops “exercised extreme restraint” to avoid more casualties in the shooting. The army did not say anything on the Afghan Taliban guard’s possible motives for opening fire and there was no immediate comment from Afghanistan’s Taliban government. Pakistan has asked the Afghan Taliban authorities to investigate the “irresponsible and reckless act, apprehend and hand over the culprit to Pakistani authorities,” the military also said.
