Slightly fewer Americans applied for jobless claims last week, further indicating that the labor market remains strong in an era of high interest rates.Applications for unemployment benefits fell by 3,000 to 217,000 for the week ending Nov. 4, the Labor Department reported Thursday.Jobless claim applications are seen as representative of the number of layoffs in a given week.The four-week moving average of claims, a less volatile measure, inched up by 1,500 to 212,250.Overall, 1.83 million people were collecting unemployment benefits the week that ended Oct. 28, about 22,000 more than the previous week and the most since April.Those “continuing claims,” analyst suggest, are rising because many of those who are already unemployed may now be having a harder time finding new work.Still, the American labor market continues to show resiliency in the midst of the Federal Reserve’s campaign to get inflation back down to its 2% target.Though Fed officials opted to leave the benchmark rate a...

Student is suspected of injuring another student with a weapon at a German school

BERLIN (AP) — German police said Thursday that a student with a weapon is suspected of having injured another student at a school in the country’s southwest, German news agency dpa reported.The suspect, a teenager, was detained as part of a large-scale police operation in the town of Offenburg.The injured student was treated by emergency services, dpa reported.“The police are on site with strong forces,” local authorities said in a statement. “There is no further danger.”Police said it appeared that there was only one suspect and one victim.The school was initially cordoned off and students were asked to stay in their classrooms for their safety, dpa reported. Police to update investigation into fatal Greektown shooting

Toronto police are set to provide an update on their investigation into a fatal shooting in Greektown earlier this year. Police say gunshots rang out near Danforth and Carlaw avenues at around 3:30 a.m. on July 23 after a fight broke out involving multiple people. A man was found at the scene with gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The victim was identified as 29-year-old Shemar Powell-Flowers.A 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with the shooting on Aug. 4 and charged with second-degree murder.Investigators say a Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a second murder suspect.Police are expected to provide new information from Toronto Police Service (TPS) headquarters at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
